The Dortmund native has worn the Black & Yellow shirt for 12 years since returning to the club of his youth in 2012 – a level of loyalty that is rarely seen in modern professional football. That means the 34-year-old, who earlier played for BVB at youth level, has spent a total of more than 21 years at the club of his heart. Reus is now looking for a new adventure at the end of his impressive career.

BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke paid tribute to the fan favourite’s great service to the Black & Yellow colours: “Marco Reus is one of the club’s greatest players. He was born in Dortmund, played for almost 10 years in our youth setup and for 12 years with the first team, and was our club captain for a long time. His connection to Borussia Dortmund is extraordinary. We wish Marco all the best for his future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his playing career, because there are enough exciting challenges awaiting him here in Dortmund.”

Marco Reus played in the Borussia Dortmund youth setup from 1995 until the start of 2005 and returned to BVB from Mönchengladbach as “Germany’s Footballer of the Year” in the summer of 2012. Reus was an important part of the team that stormed into the 2013 Champions League final in London and twice won the DFB-Pokal, lifting the trophy himself as captain in 2021. The attacking star wore the armband for the Black & Yellows for five years, between 2018 and 2023. He will forever remain one of the club’s great figures. In his 424 appearances to date, he has scored 168 goals and assisted a further 128 goals. He was voted “Germany’s Footballer of the Year” for the second time in 2019.

Marco Reus said: “I’m incredibly grateful for and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I have spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have of course been difficult moments too. I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yet I’m happy that there is now clarity and that we can focus fully on the very important final games that we still have to play. We have a big objective in our sights that we all want to achieve together. To do so, we will need every single one of our unbelievable fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their unbelievable support over the years.”
