New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Work-related fatalities due to falls, slips, and trips increased 1.8 percent in 2022, resulting in 865 fatalities, up from 850 in 2021.

National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is an annual event to raise fall hazard awareness in New York City and across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries. For 2024, the event takes place from May 6th through the 10th.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is partnering with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), OSHA approved State Plans, the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), the National Safety Council, and others to promote this occasion.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for all industries:
Work-related fatalities due to falls, slips, and trips increased 1.8 percent in 2022, resulting in 865 fatalities, up from 850 in 2021. Most fatalities in this category (80.9 percent) were due to falls to lower levels, which had 700 fatalities in 2022. This was a 2.9-percent increase from 680 fatalities in 2021.

“This safety stand-down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about preventing construction falls,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “This is important because fatalities and injuries caused by falls are preventable. Tragically, BLS reports that fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 395 of the 1069 construction fatalities recorded in 2022.”

To help prevent falls and other hazards that can cause occupational injuries, illnesses, and deaths, CTSI’s industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety (EHS) professionals offer comprehensive facility-wide safety and health programs, regulatory compliance assessments and management training, safety training, and many other resources. These services optimize workplace safety efforts and mitigate risks in accordance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
