Discourse on the Expulsion of the Acadians from their Homeland

Commemorating a family’s thirty-five-year journey from Acadie to Louisiana

Destrehan, Louisiana – WEBWIRE

A Silver Lining seeks to help the descendants of Acadians to appreciate and take pride in the sacrifices of their ancestors for the sake of the next generation.

The Seven Years’ War between France and Britain resulted in a harsh change to Nova Scotia, previously named Acadie, especially to its Acadian inhabitants. Ollie Ann Porche Voelker, a former educator, portrayed the expulsion of Acadians from their homeland in her historical fiction, A Silver Lining: From Acadie to Louisiana.

Ollie Voelker’s interest in her genealogy led her to discover her roots from the Acadians and, later, inspired her to write a story that tells the journey of her Acadian ancestors in their search for a place they will freely claim as their own.

A Silver Lining gave life to nine-year-old Pelagie Benoist, the author’s ancestor, and her family’s flight from their homeland, Acadie, to live in Île Saint-Jean and the Fortress of Louisbourg… This Their deportation resulted in difficult years of searching, settling, and searching again, which ensued for almost thirty-five years.

“I really enjoyed reading the manuscript and I congratulate you for this wonderful contribution to our common history and heritage,” says Maurice Basque, a scientific advisor at the Institute of Acadian Studies, upon reading the book before its publication.
