Solano County Public Health Professionals Share Information about Common Sources of Lead

LA Testing provides environmental laboratory services to identify lead and other hazardous materials to protect workers and families.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE

Recently, several public health advocates from the Solano County Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and Solano County Health & Social Services shared their knowledge of common sources of lead with residents of California. The information was published in the Times-Herald and discussed everything from lead in some candies, foods, medicines, jewelry, pottery and plastics as well as lead-based paints and soil contamination.

Understanding potential ways people can be exposed to lead is important, especially with regards to safeguarding children. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified and at least 4 million households in the United States have children living in them that are being exposed to high levels of lead.

For most people, exposure to lead in the home from the past use of lead-based paints is likely to be the most common form of exposure. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if a home was built before 1978 there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. The agency also confirms that lead from paint, including lead-contaminated dust, is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning.

“Fortunately, whether it’s testing for lead in paint, dust, water, soil or other materials, lead testing is quick and affordable,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, we offer comprehensive lead testing solutions, all of the sampling supplies necessary and even easy-to-use test kits. Understanding where lead is present is the first step in preventing future lead poisoning cases from ever developing.”

LA Testing has also sponsored an educational video about lead in people’s homes that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/PJMX4oNaLTQ.
