Preparing for a Warming World: 2017’s Scorching Temperatures and Billion-Dollar Disasters

WEBWIRE

In response to data released from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declaring 2017 as the 3rd warmest year ever in the US, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from senior director of adaptation and resilience, Shaun Martin:

“While the weather can change on a dime, our climate is steadily warming. Each year provides another piece of evidence in what science has already confirmed – the consequences of rising temperatures are putting people and wildlife at risk. Human-caused changes in climate are intensifying the life-threatening issues that come with a warmer planet and affect us all daily.

“In the US, we’re seeing more severe droughts, wildfires, crop losses, and more frequent coastal storms with deadly impacts. In America’s Arctic, the cascading effects of melting ice caps shrink ecosystems, threaten iconic wildlife, and contribute to rising global sea levels.

“We need make sure America’s communities are prepared for changes to come. Today’s leaders need to take the necessary steps to make sure tomorrow’s communities are safe from the devastating impacts of our changing climate.”
