My Friend Rachel by Shep, the Dog is an endearing children’s book with origins in Kansas. Cathy’s book delves into the beauty of friendship. It has fantastic pictures, perfectly matching its captivating narrative. It is written for children ages five and up, especially third graders.

The heartwarming tale is set in 1901 when Shep the dog is welcomed into a loving family living on a Kansas prairie farm. Shep is running away from an abusive life with some mean cowboys. Rachel, the youngest daughter, befriends Shep. She and her brother, Jake, have many adventures with Shep, who tells this story. They especially like just sitting together and discussing their lives. When the family has to move to the big city, Rachel and Shep’s friendship is tested, and they find that true friendship is forever.

The book promises that children will delight in the vivid characters of Rachel and Shep. As an excellent educational resource, it has a game and set of questions, allowing little ones to think about the value of friends and what it means to be a good friend to anyone. Several book pages are arranged for children to color and draw pictures of the story, allowing them to practice their creativity.
