Hollywood Screenwriter Denis O’Neill Set to Exhibit First Foray into Children’s Book Writing at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2024

Author, screenwriter and public television writer/producer Denis O’Neill, whose 1994 film, The River Wild, was a box office hit for Universal Studios, has published his first children’s book. Titled Bradford’s Walk, and illustrated by accomplished artist Cyrus Quadland, the story showcases O’Neill’s literary talent in a new genre; he hopes it will delight a new audience of young and older readers alike.

“A pleasant, poetic recount of one dog’s good day.”

At the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2024, visitors can expect exhibits from countless authors, big and small. Yet, somewhere in between them, one can also find the name of Hollywood screenwriter Denis O’Neill.

A one-time writer for Boston’s celebrated public television station, WGBH TV, O’Neill is perhaps best known for his outdoor thriller, The River Wild, which starred Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon, was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, and took top box office honors the week it was released.

In recent years Mr. O’Neill has released a Dartmouth College Memoir, two books of Musings, and two outdoor thrillers, one inspired by his screenplay for The River Wild.

There was a dog (Maggie) in The River Wild, but his latest tale – a collaboration with illustrator Cyrus Quadland – features a family Coonhound in an adventure called Bradford’s walk.

The story of Bradford’s Walk is simple enough. It follows a sweet, excitable coonhound named Bradford who wants to go for a walk. It tells of all the sights that he and his owner encounter along the way.

Yet, as simple as the story is, O’Neill holds nothing back in describing it all with sing-song verses that go along splendidly with the light colors of Quadland’s illustrations. It’s a book that’s meant to be a casual, pleasant delight for readers of all ages.

Those attending the L.A. Times Festival of Books can easily find Bradford’s Walk on display at the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet’s exhibit at booth #225. The literary festival is scheduled for April 20-21 at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Those who’d like a copy now can already order the book at online retailers, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Of course, Denis O’Neill still has plenty of other projects in his creative pipeline, and he’s gradually sharing more about them on his website at https://denisroneill.com/.
