MaryAnn Milton Butterfield’s Award-Winning Children’s Book “Don’t Call Me That!” Will Be Displayed at the 2024 L.A. Times Festival of Books

The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet will display “Don’t Call Me That!: My Name is Michael” by MaryAnn Milton Butterfield at the 2024 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The book festival will take place on April 20-21, 2024, at the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles, USA.

“Don’t Call Me That!” follows Michael Kim, a bright Asian-American boy excited about starting a new school until he arrives at the bus stop. A group had already gathered, and one boy pointed at Michael and called him a name. The others thought it was funny, but Michael was embarrassed, especially since he didn’t know what it meant. He told the boy to stop, but instead, the teasing got worse, and almost every day, the boy would laugh and scare Michael and his new friend Jason.

Michael and Jason wanted to make sure the boy couldn’t find the fort they were building, believing he might try to sabotage it, so they decided to trick him. Their plan backfired big time, and Michael got in BIG trouble at home and school. But what was he supposed to do when he couldn’t tell anybody about this mean boy?

“Don’t Call Me That!” is not just a story. It’s a powerful tool for children’s social skills development. It brings awareness to positive vs. negative behavior, aids in developing inclusive relationships, and teaches children the difference between ’having fun’ and ’bullying behavior.’ It’s a book that empowers children to speak up about their fears without the fear of being labeled as ’tattling.’

MaryAnn Milton Butterfield’s book has received the BOR Bill of Responsibility Award, an award for a story that helps children understand and accept responsibility for their behavior.
