Mold Contamination Forcing California Tax Collecting Agency to Move

The executive director of the California Board of Equalization has convinced state lawmakers to draft a bill that would authorize the agency to find a new place of business. The agency is currently housed in a 24-story building in Sacramento that has suffered from recurring leaks and mold contamination.

Employees working day after day in buildings with high levels of mold can become sensitized. Mold can cause a host of adverse reactions to people sensitive to its exposure, including allergies. These symptoms can include watery eyes, congestion, itchy nose, sneezing, coughing and even rashes. Mold can also trigger dangerous asthma attacks in some people.

When moisture enters a building, mold can quickly begin to reproduce by creating and releasing spores into the air. People are at an increased risk of becoming allergic to mold when they are exposed to elevated levels or prolonged exposures. This condition can result from living or working in a building or environment that has mold problems.

Some types of mold can also produce mycotoxins. These toxins can be dangerous to other living organisms, including humans. Symptoms that have been associated with exposure to mycotoxins have included idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis in infants, cognitive problems, immunosuppression, cancer, cytoxicity and other medical health issues. Currently there are no governmental regulations for allowable levels of mold or mycotoxins in indoor environments.
