The Press Association announces key editorial appointments

27 March 2006, The Press Association has announced three key appointments to its special correspondents and regional news reporting teams.

Will Batchelor has been appointed Northern Editor, following the retirement of Peter Beal, and will represent the national news agency in the north of England as the senior journalist in the area. Based in Liverpool, he will lead PA’s northern reporting team on major news stories and liaise with customers in the region.

Will joined The Press Association as a reporter in Liverpool in 2001 and was appointed North-West Chief Reporter in 2003. Prior to joining PA he worked at the Mercury Press Agency in Liverpool, progressing to news editor. In addition, Will writes a weekly column for the Liverpool Echo and was shortlisted for the Press Gazette Regional Columnist of the Year in 2005.

Following the retirement of Peter Archer, Laura Elston has been appointed Court Correspondent. Laura joined PA in 2000 as a trainee on the agency’s renowned editorial training scheme. After spending time in London and Cardiff working on general news, she was appointed Deputy Court Correspondent in 2003.

Since becoming Deputy Court Correspondent, Laura has interviewed Prince William in his final year at university and Prince Harry to mark his 21st birthday. She has also travelled the world covering the Prince of Wales’s tours including Iraq, Iran, Bosnia, Jordan, Sri Lanka and Australia. She is currently abroad for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall’s official visit to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India.

Jane Kirby has been appointed Health Correspondent. Jane joined PA in 2002 as a trainee and following time as a general reporter in London and Manchester, she became a staff reporter in 2005. Whilst studying for her NCTJ, Jane worked at The Argus newspaper in Brighton and was shortlisted for the student feature writer award in the Press Gazette Student Journalism Awards.
