Motorola Labs and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Corporate R&D Center Announce Licensing Agreement

Industry-First Gen 3 Embedded Capacitor Technology from Motorola to Enhance Miniaturization of Electronic Functions in Handheld Products

SCHAUMBURG, Illinois, and TOKYO, Japan – 27 March 2006 – Motorola Labs, the advanced research arm of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), and Mitsui Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. of Japan (TSE:5706) today announced a licensing agreement giving Mitsui commercial manufacturing rights to Motorola’s patented Gen 3 Embedded Capacitor Technology.

Mitsui will use the licensed Motorola technology to develop and market a commercial foil that can be used for integrating capacitors in mezzanine layers of High Density Interconnect Printed Wiring Boards (HDI PWBs).

The commercial foil with Motorola Gen 3 technology will enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to replace capacitors typically mounted on the surface of a PWB, with those embedded inside the PWB, freeing-up space on the PWB surface for other functions. This is the first time such advanced capability for integration will be made available to the industry and is key to driving miniaturization and functionality improvement in electronics products.

“As the number of wireless functions in cell phones increase, the number of passive components necessary to realize superior performance also increases,” said Dr. Aroon Tungare, Director of Miniaturization Technologies, Motorola Labs. “Motorola’s Gen 3 technology allows a large number of capacitors to be eliminated from the PWB surface, thereby reducing footprint and cost of electrical function, while simultaneously improving performance.”

Motorola will implement Mitsui’s commercial foil into the PWBs of its own products to continue to achieve efficient space utilization, advanced performance, improved reliability, and lower manufacturing costs in its mobile devices.
