Johns Hopkins University Global Water Program Taps TestAmerica Expertise

WEBWIRE

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Global Water Program (GWP), whose focus is solving the global water challenge, invited TestAmerica Laboratories, Inc. to provide their water testing expertise in the current issue of the GWP magazine. TestAmerica expert and Burlington, VT Technical Director, Bryce Stearns, provides his insight into a new and upcoming concern for the nation’s water supply, Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs).

Mr. Stearns is published in the most recent GWP magazine on Emerging Contaminants, January 27, 2011, in the piece “What Will Be the Next Big Environmental Crisis and Are We Seeing Glimpses of It Now?” With the plethora of products purchased for household use, Mr. Stearns’ article focuses on the issues and challenges surrounding the effects of PPCPs discharged to our nation’s water supply.

“With their comparatively rapid emergence onto the stage, there has been little opportunity to develop comprehensive insight into their characteristics. Unlike the current list of regulated contaminants, these compounds have little or no long-term health and environmental data on which to rely,” states Mr. Stearns regarding the challenging aspects of PPCPs in today’s society.

Mr. Stearns has over 23 years of experience in the environmental laboratory industry and has been involved with complex organic testing, air toxics, and research and development. He has been with the Burlington laboratory for over 20 years where he currently holds the position of Technical Director. Mr. Stearns earned a BS in Environmental Science from Johnson State College in Johnson, Vermont.

JHU, known worldwide as a prestigious and philanthropic institution of higher education, has a long history in water leadership. “Water crosses all boundaries, politically and scientifically. We need to talk across these boundaries and work together to solve water problems, which is why JHU created the Global Water Magazine. There is tremendous value in engaging diverse players in dialogue on water, and the Global Water Magazine continues to seek contributions from innovative thinkers of all backgrounds - industry, governance, management, NGOs, academia, and more,” offered Luke MacDonald, Ph.D., Program Manager, Johns Hopkins Global Water Program.
