California’s Prop 65 and Chrysene Public Health Concerns

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. This list includes chrysene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) consisting of four fused benzene rings. It is a natural constituent of coal tar and is also found in creosote. It is used in the manufacture of some dyes and also can be found in cigarette smoke, coke oven emissions, and diesel exhaust and as a byproduct when a number of other materials are burned.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) lists chrysene as possibly carcinogenic to humans, whereas the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has it classified as a probable human carcinogen. The State of California lists it as a carcinogen.

People may be exposed to chrysene from environmental sources in the air, water and soil or due to occupational exposures. People who work at coal tar and asphalt production plants, or at coal gasification factories and trash incinerators, are some of the workers who may have the highest exposure risks. Exposure to chrysene can cause eye and skin irritations and respiratory tract issues.
