Drinking Games warned potential hosts this week about possible legal and other repercussions related to organizing or hosting games that center around the consumption of alcohol.  The company said that while all drinking games can be played without alcohol, they rarely are and therefore hosts assume a certain amount of risk that should be carefully mitigated.

RJ Hudson, founder of the company which is primarily based on the website http://www.drinkinggames.me, stated during an interview that hosts could stand to lose a lot if their drinking games get out of control.

“A lot of things can happen during or immediately after a drinking game.  Drunk driving, unruliness and fights, vandalism, sexual crimes and alcohol poisoning aren’t uncommon when people drink to excess.  Therefore, hosts must be aware of these issues and ensure that the game is well organized and the environment safe.”

Hudson referred to laws that hold people accountable for the actions of others when intoxicated.  This includes such scenarios as bartenders and wait-staff being prosecuted or fined for serving minors or already drunk people, and laws that can send a host to jail for the actions of his guests during a party or drinking game.  This includes crimes related to drunk driving and even vehicular homicide.

Drinking games have been played for centuries, including by ancient Chinese and Grecian cultures, but today they are somewhat controversial.  In fact, a number of Universities in the United States have barred students from playing such games because they encourage rapid consumption of alcohol in an environment that can quickly get out of control.

Despite the nature of his website, Hudson agreed:

“We don’t advise young, inexperienced people to play drinking games.  If they do, we recommend switching partway through the game to a non-alcoholic beverage.  In fact, we strongly suggest that all participants be aware of their personal limits and to not drink at all if they can’t drink responsibly.”

But Rachel Clark, a public relations officer for the company, said that it’s not as simple as personal limits and choices when it comes to organized drinking games, and said that hosts would do well to take precautions:

“Collect car keys before the game starts, provide taxis or alternate transportation arrangements, sleeping arrangements if possible, and a medically-qualified person to remain sober and monitor participants.  Hosts have a serious responsibility to ensure that the players and the entire community are safeguarded from harm.  If not, they can be held responsible.”

DrinkingGames.me is a website dedicated to drinking games and its associated culture.  The site features articles and instructions for nearly 100 games, and has several online drinking games and a book in development.  For questions or to learn more, visit the company website at http://www.drinkinggames.me or call 1-802-738-0775
