Sensor less commutation of BLDC motors

New patent enables efficient control

27.06.2006. Dortmund: ELMOS Semiconductor AG (FSE: ELG) has started the development of a standard product family for sensor less commutation of brush less DC motors (BLDC motors). This is based on an exclusive license for a patent for an innovative method of sensor less control of BLDC motors.

The method allows to determine the position of the rotor without additional components. In comparison to the common sensor less methods this method allows the function of the motor in the whole revolutions per minute (rpm) range beginning with a rpm of zero.

Both standard products and customer specific semiconductor solutions are planned. The development has already started and intensively worked on.

Since many years ELMOS is successful in the area of controlling electrical motors. The extensive know how in the area of motor control of stepper and DC motors is now expanded to BLDC applications. BLDC motors are gaining more and more significance because of the better efficiency factor in comparison to DC motors. At the same time the electro magnetic interferences are reduced thanks to the avoidances of brush arcing. Because of the simpler mechanical structure and the significantly reduced wear out this motor type can be found in more and more applications, especially in cases where high reliability is required.

Today, BLDC motors are already used in pumps or radiator fans. Because of their robustness they are gaining importance in automatic transmission, electrical gearing and braking systems.

Jointly with the family of ripple-counter ICs for sensor less control of the position of DC motors, ELMOS is offering its customers specially tailored and cost saving solutions, for all common automotive motor types.
