Harris Corporation Awarded $4.5 Million Contract by Boeing for Apache Helicopter Solid State Recording Device
MELBOURNE, Florida, August 2, 2006 — Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), a world leader in advanced avionics for military aircraft, today announced that it has been awarded a $4.5 million contract by The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) to develop and supply preproduction Solid State Recording Device (SSRD) units for the U.S. Army’s AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter. The SSRD stores sensor data and video, aircraft systems data and other high-density data required to maximize aircrew situational awareness and training, as well as aircraft maintenance. The value of the production phase of the contract is estimated at $16.4 million, bringing the total potential value of the SSRD program for Harris to nearly $21 million.
"As a longtime supplier to Boeing on the Apache aircraft, we at Harris are very pleased to be selected for the SSRD contract" said Sheldon Fox, vice president and general manager of the Department of Defense Programs business unit of the Harris Government Communications Systems Division. "The Harris SSRD will provide the next generation of powerful, onboard data storage and retrieval capabilities to support the Apache helicopter’s combat missions"
The Harris SSRD replaces the Expanded Data Transfer Unit and combines the separate data and video storage devices on the Multiyear II Apache AH-64D. The SSRD provides a minimum of 64 Gigabytes of nonvolatile, removable onboard data storage in a small, lightweight and ruggedized military package. The device features a powerful processor and memory hardware, and communicates with on-board mission processors via multiple 1 Gigabyte Ethernet interfaces.
The Apache Longbow helicopter features fully integrated avionics and weapons, and a state-of-the-art modem that transmits real-time, secure and digitized battlefield information to air and ground forces. It can rapidly detect, classify, prioritize and engage stationary or moving targets at standoff ranges in nearly all weather environments.
