Bed Bug Infestation Forces Arizona Family from their Home
Last month, Phoenix’s 12 News broadcasted a report about an Arizona family’s battle with bed bugs. According to the report, the infestation got so bad that it forced the family from their apartment into a motel to escape the insects. Even the family’s physician wrote a letter for them to share with their landlord stating that they should leave the apartment immediately. The story goes on to discuss how tenant agreements rarely provide any compensation for people forced to deal with, or vacate, a property due to a bed bug infestation.
Bed bugs are found worldwide and up until several years ago were considered by many as primarily a problem in developing countries. In recent years, there have been countless reports of bed bug infestations in places that had not had issues for decades or more. Today, the insects can be found in everything from single family homes and apartment complexes to luxury resorts and hotels.
These small, flat, parasitic insects feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. Bed bugs are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. They can be an ongoing annoyance because they often cause itching and loss of sleep for people living in infested properties. Some people may even suffer allergic reactions to their presence.
“As described in this and countless other news reports, people can be burdened with health concerns and costly ramifications when dealing with bed bugs in their home,” reported Charles Li, Ph.D., Director of PCR and DNA Analysis at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, there are bed bug testing methods that allow people to test a property before signing a lease, making a purchase or just to determine if they are present in an existing home. EMSL provides these services utilizing advanced qPCR techniques, which allows for rapid results that are available in as short as one day.”
