Elevated Levels of Mold Closes Virginia School for the Remainder of the School Year
Last month, WTVR broadcasted a report about the temporary closing of a middle school in Virginia. The middle school will reportedly be closed for the rest of the school year due to high levels of mold that has created concern with students and faculty who attend the school.
According to the news story, a leaky steam pipe contributed to the mold problem and unhealthy indoor air quality. Mold was discovered after students and faculty complained to school administrators who hired indoor air quality (IAQ) consultants to investigate the problem. Air testing was performed and confirmed there was an issue. As a result, the school’s staff and students are being relocated to another school.
A leaking steam pipe, high humidity levels, plumbing leaks, roof leaks or other water damaging events can all quickly lead to the growth of mold indoors. Students and teachers exposed to elevated levels of mold in their classrooms day after day can develop a wide range of health concerns. Inhalation exposure to mold can cause issues ranging from triggering asthma in people with the condition to causing allergies, respiratory problems and even infections in anyone with a weakened immune system. Some types of mold commonly found growing indoors are also known to produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins.
“Unfortunately, we hear about mold problems in schools on a regular basis,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Old facilities, limited preventive maintenance budgets and a host of other reasons make schools vulnerable to moisture issues and subsequent mold growth. This can lead to learning difficulties, illnesses and increased absenteeism. At EMSL, we offer test kits, sampling supplies and testing services to identify mold in schools, homes and commercial buildings.”
An educational video about potential health concerns due to breathing mold has been sponsored by EMSL and can be seen at http://youtu.be/61eTg1WfJHo.
EMSL also offer a Mold Test Kit that can be found at www.EMSLTestKits.com.
