"Providing a secure way to dispose of sensitive personal documents helps us raise awareness of the growing threat of identity fraud," said Charlotte Cash, President and CEO of CommonWealth One.
CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union held its spring Shred Days event in Harrisonburg, VA on Sat., April 25 and in Alexandria, VA on Sat., May 9. An identical event is also held in the fall each year.
CommonWealth One offered this popular service free to members and non-members alike, who brought over 5 tons of old documents, receipts and other personal materials to Shred Days at both locations to be securely destroyed on site.
“Holding the event on a Saturday makes it more convenient to participate,” said Charlotte Cash, President and CEO of CommonWealth One. She noted that while Shred Days has always been popular with members, it’s becoming especially popular with non-members. In fact, this year in Alexandria, almost as many non-members as members participated. Also, 90% of all visitors were repeat participants from the previous year, confirming that they value this convenient service, which helps protect against identity theft and fraud.
Offering it to non-members is part of CommonWealth One’s commitment to the community at large. “It exposes us to residents who might not otherwise be familiar with the credit union, and it increases the number of people who are fighting back against identity fraud,” Charlotte Cash said. “Providing a secure way to dispose of sensitive personal documents helps us raise awareness of the growing threat of identity fraud,” she added.
