Memories of World War II Reminisced at the Frankfurt Book Fair
Christel Decker Bresko displayed her memoir on what life looks like during World War II.
This way, she can paint a clear picture of what was life like in Germany when Hitler came to power and how her family tried to survive during World War II.
Wars will always have a place in this world. Since everyone can’t seem to see eye to eye at all times, the possibility of being at war is inevitable. But it doesn’t mean we welcome the chance for chaos. Innocent people die, families are broken, and all the necessities become scarce during a war. Now, if you really want to hear a real story of a family’s struggle during a war, then you ought to read “Mother, If in Heaven There Are No Apples, I Don’t Want to Go There” written by Christel Decker Bresko.
In this memoir, she has compiled all her memories and transformed it into vignettes, anecdotes, and short stories. This way, she can paint a clear picture of what was life like in Germany when Hitler came to power and how her family tried to survive during World War II.
She was just a little girl when the war erupted. Her family tried to stay neutral while her father was drafted in the army. Even though food, shelter, and medicine were scarce, Christel’s mother tried her best to raise her and her siblings.
“It was a very hard time. Our family tried to survive no matter what. But after everything that we went through, my desire to see the world never ceased from my heart. So, when I had the chance to study English and go to England, I was more than willing to grab the opportunity that was handed to me. That’s the story of how I got out of Germany and how I eventually arrived in America”, according to the author.
So, if you want to get a sneak peek at what life looks like when the world was in chaos during World War II, then you have to spend some time with Christel Bresko and her book. As you go back in history, you will find that it’s going to be an afternoon to remember.
Moreover, “Mother, if in Heaven There Are No Apples, I Don’t Want to Go There” was displayed at the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair. The event was held last October 14-18, 2015 at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt, Germany. Several materials were also exhibited at the LitFire booth during the whole event.
