A Sister’s Memoir Touched the Hearts of Many at Frankfurt Book Fair
Dr. Rosalie H. Contino Imparts Life Lessons She Earned from Taking Care of a 61-Year-Old Schizophrenic Brother
This work raises awareness of the gravity of responsibility as a family member’s guardian, in the same way it opened Dr. Contino’s eyes to the unspeakable truth.
To what extent should one care for a family member? Most people would claim that their love for their families knows no boundary, but with the test of time and financial difficulties, they feel that caring for a disabled or an aged family member has become a cross to bear. Dr. Rosalie H. Contino has gone through the same experience which is reflected in her book.
As Life Goes On is a memoir that tells the story of Dr. Contino’s caregiving endeavor toward her beloved brother, Robert. Without a full grasp of the responsibility, she made a promise on her mother’s deathbed that she will always keep an eye on her brother. Determined to fulfill that promise, Dr. Contino withstood her brother’s mockery and insolence during that period of caregiving.
This work raises awareness of the gravity of responsibility as a family member’s guardian, in the same way it opened Dr. Contino’s eyes to the unspeakable truth. She recalled, “When my brother retired, he was not a well person. I realized that I had to provide the right people and care for his well-being.” And she did, even to the point of abandoning her own dreams and plans.
Written with utmost sincerity, the book embodies the veracity of the author’s struggle in nursing her retired and disabled brother. At the same time, it inspires readers to perceive and face the situation in a new light, to cherish lessons from memories, and to never forget that love for family will conquer life challenges. It allows readers the experience of a rollercoaster ride of life, awakening feelings of love, sympathy, excitement, and forbearance, grief, resentment, and hope altogether.
The book was featured at the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair held last October 14-18, 2015 at the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt, Germany.
