Lead Poisoning Risks Greatest for Residents of San Francisco Living in Certain Areas
LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies and consumer test kits to identify lead hazards and help prevent human exposure.
In May, SFGATE published an article about areas within San Francisco where people are most likely to come into contact with lead exposure hazards. The article cites research conducted by the news magazine Vox that examined census tracks across the country and ranked them based on the risk of lead poisoning.
The research indicates that of San Francisco’s 175 census tracks, 32 were determined to be in the highest lead risk category. This equates to approximately 18% of the region, whereas Los Angeles only had 12% of its census tracks ranked in this same high risk category.
The most significant reason behind the difference between the two cities is due to the prevalence of lead-based paints that are still found in many older homes and buildings. The use of lead-based paint was banned in housing in 1978, but cities with a higher percentage of older areas are more likely to have greater exposure risks in those parts of the city. As lead-based paints age and degrade they become an increasing hazard. These same painted surfaces can also be a threat during renovation, remodeling and demolition activities if the proper safety precautions are not put in place and adhered to throughout the project.
“Children are generally considered to be at greatest risk of lead poisoning and the only way to prevent it from occurring is to prevent exposure,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “To prevent exposure, people need to know the risks in their homes, schools and daycare centers. Fortunately, this can be easily accomplished through environmental testing for lead in paints, surfaces, dust and other materials. If a lead exposure risk is identified, parents can then make an informed decision about removing or mitigating the risk.”
