Teaching children about the realities of life in simple and fun ways that a child can understand is what Larry Friend, a children’s book author, is aiming for when he published Icy the Iceberg.
 
Larry Friend created Icy the Iceberg to portray what it is like to be alone and to explore the world on one’s own. The book introduces the water cycle story to emphasize the ups and downs of life. According to Larry, the book was written to “give children hope when they are confronted with difficult and scary things in life; knowing that there is little to fear when the same situation presents itself in the future.”
 
The book features Icy, who comes to life as a tiny sparkling snowflake. He falls to earth with all expectations of a happy and exciting time with everyone, only to experience a very different and unfamiliar environment. After being trapped alone under the snow for hundreds of years, he suddenly emerges as an iceberg, able to float and reach several parts of the world. Along the way, he meets and makes friends with many creatures.
