Fire escapes are more than a functional egress form. They are an accidental art meant to ensure safety. In “The Fire Escape: A Visual Survey (Second Edition),” architect Peter J. Fire escapes are more than a functional egress form. They are an accidental art meant to ensure safety. In “The Fire Escape: A Visual Survey (Second Edition),” architect Peter J. Lagomarsino explored twenty-five cities in the four corners of America to capture the beauty of a dying and uniquely American architectural form.

Nowadays, fire escapes are disappearing by being codified out of existence. Although mostly added as an afterthought, fire escapes have a cultural importance that juxtaposes urbanity and its mimesis of the human condition. In the book, Mr. Lagomarsino captures their beauty for perpetuity, highlighting how light renders their forms in rhythm and repetition, creating some very unique shadow art. He shows that they are as diverse as the cultures that inhabit their host buildings while ironically only serving a functional need—to save man from forthcoming tragedies.

“The Fire Escape: A Visual Survey (Second Edition)” was featured in LitFire Publishing’s booth at the 33rd Miami Book Fair. The event took place at Miami Dade College–Wolfson Campus from November 12 to 19, 2017.
