January is National Radon Action Month in Puerto Rico

Zimmetry Environmental provides radon and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing services to identify and mitigate exposure risks in properties.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that several areas in Puerto Rico have the geologic potential to generate locally high indoor radon levels if housing conditions are favorable for its entry and accumulation.

This is the time to test, fix and save a life according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Those three actions are the cornerstone of the EPA’s message for its recognition of National Radon Action Month, taking place all this month.

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas that has been found in homes, schools and other institutional and commercial buildings in parts of Puerto Rico. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water, and can get into the air people breathe indoors. Radon can even enter a building through well water.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that several areas in Puerto Rico have the geologic potential to generate locally high indoor radon levels if housing conditions are favorable for its entry and accumulation. Throughout the United States, the EPA estimates that nearly 1 out of every 15 homes has an elevated radon level (4 pCi/L or more).

“Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States and claims the lives of approximately 21,000 Americans each year,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Radon can be an issue in new or old properties and not just in people’s homes. Some work environments could also be creating exposure hazards for employees. Since you cannot see, smell or taste radon, it can only be detected through specialized tests. Both the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General have urged all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon.”

Identifying and resolving indoor environmental quality issues involving radon and other indoor pollutants throughout Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean are the professionals at Zimmetry Environmental. If test results indicate elevated levels of radon, radon reduction systems can be installed to immediately begin to reduce exposure risks.
