Water Damage Leads to Mold Concerns for Residents of Six-Story Apartment Complex

EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides testing services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify mold and other indoor environmental quality issues.

Orlando, FL – WEBWIRE

Recently, multiple media outlets reported on a significant water leak at a six-story apartment complex in Daytona Beach, Florida. According to the news reports, over 100 residents of the apartment building had to be temporarily evacuated after heavy rains breached the ceiling and caused widespread flooding in a number of apartments and common areas of the large building.

Residents shared stories of water gushing from ceilings and photos of hallways under several inches of water. One tenant spoke of ongoing mold issues at the building even before the recent flooding event. Now, with so many parts of the building impacted by this latest water incursion, concerns over mold and indoor air quality issues are on the minds of many.

“Mold problems in apartments or condos can easily occur if water damage or elevated levels of humidity are not addressed in a timely manner,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Acting quickly can be exceptionally challenging when there is a large scale flooding event that impacts many units. Unfortunately, mold can begin to grow in under 48 hours on most building materials, furnishing and personal belongings when enough moisture is introduced. The mold growth can not only damage materials, it can also quickly lead to indoor air quality concerns and potential health issues if building occupants are exposed to elevated levels of mold.”

To help in these situations, EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers analytical services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to help identify mold and other indoor environmental quality issues. Testing can also be invaluable for people looking to rent or lease an apartment and for those concerned that there may already be a problem where they live.
