JF Chen Collection
Live Auction | February 13, 2018 | New York
Online Auction | February 7-14, 2018
Christie’s is pleased to present JF Chen Collection to take place on February 13, 2018 in a dedicated auction at Christie’s Rockefeller Center with an online auction taking place from February 7-14. The selection offered presents over 300 lots spanning Asian art, decorative objects, and contemporary design, representative of Joel Chen’s unique style and discerning eye.
Among the objects included in the sale are iconic pieces by mid-century and contemporary designers including Dan Johnson, Georges Jouve, Finn Juhl, Carlo Mollino, Ettore Sottsass, Hans Wegner, and emerging artist Michael Wilson, interspersed with traditional Asian art, spanning 18th-to-19th-century Chinese furniture, bronzes, hardstone-carvings, porcelains, and ceramics, as well as Japanese screens, inlaid objects, and bronzes.
In business for 40 years, Joel Chen is renowned for refined taste, design intelligence, and innovation. As a young man, Chen grew up in colonial Hong Kong and was educated in Great Britain. He later attended college in Los Angeles, where his passion for furniture and antiques was ignited. A scholar with enthusiasm and a brilliant eye, Chen has transformed a little shop on Melrose Avenue into a mainstay of the Los Angeles design world. It is a showplace where connoisseurs and beginning collectors alike are welcome to experience the visual and tactile qualities of beautiful objects and are encouraged to bring these qualities into their everyday lives.
The online sale taking place February 7-14, will be on view at Christie’s New York concurrently, and is broken into sections: Chairs, Lighting, Tables, Fine Art, and Decorative Objects comprising over fifty lots representative of Joel Chen’s distinct style. Together the auctions encompass over 300 lots with estimates on individual items ranging from under $1,000 up to $70,000.
JF Chen Collection presents a story of history and legacy, but also one of adaptation and great taste. His progression from Asian works of art, to more traditional antiques and into the heavy-hitters of the Design field is reflected in the pieces on offer in the February 2018 sales.
