Puerto Rican Company Provides Expertise in Protecting Workers from Exposure to Nanomaterials

As more companies and research institutions work with engineered nanomaterials for industrial and commercial products, a growing number of occupational, health and safety professionals have begun to raise concerns about worker exposures to these tiny materials. This is due to the fact that so many workers in industries that utilize nanomaterials have the potential to be exposed to these engineered materials through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion.
 
These exposure concerns are being felt around the globe and in response, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently released Guidelines on Protecting Workers from Potential Risks of Manufactured Nanomaterials. The document provides a broad list of best practices and safety recommendations to assess and control occupational exposures to nanomaterials.
 
“Engineered or manufactured nanomaterials are materials that have been purposefully manufactured, synthesized or manipulated to have a size with at least one dimension in the range of approximately 1 to 100 nanometers,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Technology-based companies and institutions in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean that work with these near-atomic scale materials need to take special precautions. This is because nanomaterials often exhibit unique properties that affect physical, chemical and biological behavior that could cause harm to exposed workers.”
