“Reichwein has created a break-neck, rip-roaring revenge adventure, lending a welcome Tarantino-ish feel to plot. The story follows intrepid and socially conscious Detective Michelle Velasquez, Santa Fe PD, as she investigates a horrific rape case. Other character points of view factor into the narrative, to lend multiple sides to this frantic chase as it develops.

“From the get-go, this book’s design catches the eye: the cover design, logo, font-choices, interior design--all of these touches line up perfectly with the story (and its attached message). These savvy design choices enhances the experience in subtle but important ways, setting it apart--visually-- from other stories in its genre.

“Most important, however, is the fact that this story doesn’t let up or meander in pointless detail. The plot is fast-paced, sticking to its guns (pun most certainly intended), which helps the reader maintain focus. There is a fair amount of political commentary present, here. Detective Velasquez, for one, is someone I’d describe as “woke.” But the commentary -- with which I agree -- is put forth through the character’s thoughts, dialogue, and action, and therefore becomes part of the plot, rather than detracting from it. In other words, the political position of this book is critical to the development of the story, which is why it works. In particular, I thought the strategic insertion of hashtags was a good touch.

“Every now and then, you’ll stumble across an action that a character makes or a thought he or she has that seems almost a caricature. HOWEVER, as someone who has known totally ridiculous people similar to the ones described in this book, these representations seemed pretty legit to me. I found one character’s cartoonish dickheadedness to be amusing while, at the same time, underscoring how badly I wanted him to be killed off. Generating that kind of enmity is a sign of good story telling. If I had to summarize this book in a word, it’d be ‘catharsis.’”

“Author Julie Reichwein has put together a gripping, relentless, super fast psychological thriller and I wouldn’t expect less when it comes to… revenge!

“This novel is divided in 69 chapters and each one of them is allocated to a specific character at a time. I really enjoy this kind of organization as it strengthens characterization, we come to know each one of the characters really well – ie. their motives, thoughts, traumas, fears, backgrounds, etc. And certainly she did a thorough research about the different characters, for instance, sexual assailants and their psychology. For the characters have very strong personalities and their souls are masterfully exposed in their sick, gritty, dirty and dark glory, sometimes their behaviors borders on the ridicule but I think it adds to their authenticity.
