“Tomi Red 2013” becomes the first to receive the Japanese wine category Trophy

Suntory Wine International Ltd.’s flagship Japanese wine, “Tomi Red 2013” won the Gold medal in the Japanese wine (red) category of “International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2018,” as well as the Trophy, the highest award in the division. This is the first time the Trophy has been awarded to a Japanese wine in this competition.

The IWC has been held every April since 1984. It is the world’s largest wine competition where over 10,000 wines are exhibited. The categories are divided according to combinations of country and wine type, such as “French wine (red)” and “Italian wine (sparkling)”. The Trophy is an award bestowed on a brand distinguished from among wines that won the Gold medal in each category.

Winning these awards is a high commendation for the efforts Suntory has made to date toward viticulture and is recognized as deeply meaningful. We will continue to share the merits of Japanese wine with our customers and strive to further improve value and quality.

“Tomi” is produced with only the highest quality grapes cultivated through meticulous limited harvesting at Tomi no Oka Winery (Yamanashi Prefecture). The flagship brand of Suntory’s Japanese wine is the culmination of the skill and passion of the winemakers. “Tomi Red 2013” strikes a superb balance between a sweet fruity aroma, and the aroma of black olives, dried tomatoes, pepper, and licorice. It features a refined mouthfeel and high-quality tannin that envelops the palate.

● International Wine Challenge (IWC)
IWC is the world’s largest competition for wine and Japanese sake that has been held in London since 1984. The top award-winning wines are said to especially draw attention from oenophiles around the world. Judging is conducted through a blind tasting in which the wine labels are concealed during the tasting, and the wines are selected and assessed by judges on several occasions.
