Firefighters Moved at California Fire Station due to Mold Concerns
LA Testing offers indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies and test kits to help identify mold, allergens and potential asthma triggers.
Fox 40 recently published a report about health concerns expressed by firefighters and their union representatives at a West Sacramento fire station. The news story discusses mold found at Station 45 that was initially thought to be just in an office area, but was later allegedly also found in the dorm area where firefighters sleep. According to the article, the firefighters have been moved out of the affected area and the cost to fix the underlying problem and remove the mold is estimated at approximately $250,000.
Unfortunately, mold can be found in virtually any home or building that has suffered water damage or conditions with elevated humidity levels. It can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours and most building materials and furnishing readily support the growth of mold if they are wet or damp.
“Once mold begins to grow indoors, spores can be released into the air and cause a wide range of health concerns,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “These often include allergies, asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even the possibility of infections in some people with a weakened immune system. At LA Testing we offer analytical services to identify mold from all types of indoor environments throughout California. Testing provides evidence of what types of mold are present and at what concentrations. This information is also crucial when post remediation tests are conducted to be able to compare the before and after results of any mold removal actions.”
LA Testing has sponsored an educational video about what mold needs to grow indoors that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/t9X9H4E0edk.
