Winter 2019 Family, Kids, Teen, and School Programs at the Guggenheim Museum

In 2019 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum celebrates 60 years as an architectural icon. Since opening its doors on October 21, 1959, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building has inspired generations of visitors as a unique “temple of spirit” where radical art and architecture meet. The Guggenheim is now open seven days a week with evening hours on Tuesdays and Saturdays to coincide with this milestone.

Programs for families, kids, middle schoolers, and teens are presented in conjunction with the exhibitions Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future, and R. H. Quaytman: + x, Chapter 34, and the building’s 60th anniversary.

Families with children ages 5 and up
On the second Sunday of every month, the Guggenheim offers family tours that incorporate conversation and creative, hands-on gallery activities while exploring the exhibitions on view. These museum educator-led tours are organized around a single theme and highlight artworks from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.

February 10: Happy Anniversary, Guggenheim Museum!
Celebrate the Guggenheim’s 60th building anniversary with an in-depth look at the building.

March 10: Abstraction in Action!
Investigate abstract artworks and see how artists interpret the world around them in unique ways.

April 14: Sixty Years of Shapes
In honor of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Guggenheim Museum, explore shapes in the art on view and in the building’s architecture.

Caregivers with children up to 24 months
Interactive, stroller-friendly tours of current exhibitions led by museum educators, featuring touchable objects, art-making, and great adult conversation.

Caregivers with children ages 2–4
This program is designed for little art lovers and their parents and guardians. In each session, children and their parent or guardian explore one or two works on view and then make a related art project in our studio. The hour includes a trip to the galleries, art-making activities, and more.

Learning Through Art (LTA), the Guggenheim’s pioneering arts education program, presents A Year with Children 2019. This annual presentation showcases select artworks by students in grades two through six from twelve public schools that participated in the LTA program during the 2018–19 school year. More than one hundred creative and imaginative works, including collages, drawings, found objects, installations, paintings, poems, and prints, will be on display. Participating from the Bronx is PS 86 (Kingsbridge Heights); from Brooklyn, PS 8 (Brooklyn Heights) and PS 9 (Prospect Heights); from Manhattan, PS 28 (Washington Heights), PS 38 (East Harlem), Mosaic Preparatory Academy (East Harlem), and PS 145 (Harlem); from Queens, PS 219 (Flushing), PS 130 (Bayside), PS 144 (Forest Hills), and PS 317 (Rockaway Park); and from Staten Island, PS 48 (Grasmere).

Ages 8–11
Participants build and improve their creative skills through gallery explorations and studio activities in these exciting vacation day camps. In the galleries, campers will explore works of art from the permanent collection and special exhibitions. In the studio, they will try out new approaches and learn new techniques while developing a personal artistic style through a variety of mediums.

Ages 8–11
In this after-school program, kids explore the museum’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, and spectacular Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building. They learn about a wide range of art-making techniques, including painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and photography through in-depth studio art projects inspired by tours with museum educators. The program concludes with an exhibition for family and friends.

For teens in grades 9–12
Energetic and outgoing high school students are invited to apply to the Guggenheim Teens program. With guidance from adult staff and volunteers, participants in Guggenheim Teens liaise with families at our Family Activity Kiosk in the lobby and facilitate gallery activities in the Open Studio program. Throughout the semester, teens attend a series of workshops about the museum profession.

This multiple-session program serves students with autism spectrum disorders. Each program is specially designed for the specific needs of the group, and includes two off-site classroom visits by museum educators and a trip to the museum including gallery activities.

Stop by the Sackler Center Studio Art Lab and create a work of art inspired by themes and techniques from the Guggenheim’s current exhibitions. Free with museum admission.

Families with children ages 4 and up
Pick up a Family Activity Guide from the Admissions desk to engage the whole family in fun gallery activities and discussions. Free with museum admission.

Borrow a Family Activity Pack with materials featuring fun conversation and activity ideas to captivate the entire family.

Sketching materials are available for loan at the Family Activity Kiosk to draw Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural shapes and spaces.
