Artist Bob Gumbs Designs Special Commemorative Coin for Harriet Tubman

New York graphic designer Bob Gumbs lost patience with the timing of the Harriet Tubman $20 bill. So he’s designed a commemorative coin to honor her. It’s available exclusively at eBay https://tinyurl.com/y3you6l4.

“She was to be the new face on the bill replacing Andrew Jackson, according to the Obama administration,” says Gumbs. “But now the Trump administration is not sure when the bill will be released. We should not wait any longer to honor this great African- American abolitionist, who led hundreds of slaves to freedom through her Underground Railroad.”

Gumbs says that he had designed the special gold alloy coin as part of his series of great black trailblazers, including Dorie Miller, Mary McLeod Bethune, Nelson Mandela, and musician Thelonious Monk. But with the uproar about the $20 bill’s delay and the upcoming biographical film about Tubman, he decided to release his coin immediately. “She will be the first black woman on our currency,” Gumbs declares, adding, “so I applaud the decision to replace her with Andrew Jackson who was not only a slaveholder but also drove Native Americans from their land in the Southeast.”

He declares that there has been a groundswell of interest in the achievements of Tubman, pointing to the resolution by Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen to have a statue of Tubman built in the United States Capitol. Also, states Gumbs, U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney has introduced bipartisan legislation to place a statue of Tubman in the U.S. Capitol.

Gumbs says that he wants you to be a part of the expanding swell of supporters who praise Harriet Tubman’s example.

“My hope is that when holding the coin, you relish her memory,” he says.
