Dropbox sets sustainability goals for 2030
At Dropbox, we’re committed to fighting global warming and reducing our carbon footprint. We’re announcing the goals that we plan to accomplish before 2030:
- Achieve carbon neutrality for scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 business travel emissions
- Source 100% renewable energy for our operations, including our data centers
- Support organizations working for climate action
- Mobilize employees to use volunteer-time-off for environmental causes
Achieving these goals is more critical than ever as the need to reverse global warming is urgent. Climate scientists widely agree that global greenhouse gas emissions must be decreased by at least 50% by 2030 to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid the worst impacts of climate change such as severe heatwaves, seas rising, more exposure to climate-related risks and poverty, and much more.
We know we have a role to play in limiting our own impact. Data centers accounted for over 1% of all electricity consumption worldwide in 2018 and it’s projected to continue growing. As a business that delivers our products through a global network of data centers, we are committed to sourcing the energy for our operations from 100% renewable energy sources. We’re also constantly looking for ways to increase storage capacity and lower energy output, through new technology like SMR. And we’re always looking at ways we can make a difference in our day-to-day business practices, like more efficient ways for our employees to work remotely and reducing business travel.
“As an organization, we feel a tremendous responsibility to create a more sustainable future,” said Bart Volkmer, Chief Legal Officer at Dropbox and the President of the Dropbox Foundation, “It’s without question that the harmful effects of climate change impact everyone and we feel an urgent need to take action. That’s why we’re committed to achieving carbon neutrality and purchasing 100% renewable energy by 2030. We know that we are one small part of a larger solution and hope this inspires others to take steps in the right direction.”
