Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month in Puerto Rico and Identifying Environmental Asthma Triggers
Zimmetry Environmental provides industrial hygiene and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate microbial and chemical exposure risks.
Asthma can have a dramatic impact on people’s quality of life and can even lead to death in extreme circumstances.
The month of May is recognized as Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month in Puerto Rico and across the globe. World Asthma Day also occurs on the 5th of May. These times of recognition are important as asthma is a chronic lung disease that has a major impact on the lives of too many residents of Puerto Rico.
In fact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that Puerto Rican children are three times as likely to have asthma, as compared to non-Hispanic whites. A recent study by researchers from the University of California San Francisco and the City University of New York found that Puerto Ricans have the highest asthma rates in the world, affecting approximately 14.2% at some point in their lives.
“Asthma can have a dramatic impact on people’s quality of life and can even lead to death in extreme circumstances,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “This is why educating the public, workers and employers about asthma and common triggers is so important to help people avoid attacks and manage their condition. Unfortunately, there are a number of common asthma triggers many people are exposed to in their daily lives. These include tobacco smoke, dust mites, mold, outdoor air pollution, cockroach allergens, dog and cat allergens, various chemicals, fragrances, and smoke from burning wood and grass. At Zimmetry, we have been helping asthmatics in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean for many years by offering air testing and monitoring services to identify biological and chemical asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. If test results indicate elevated levels are present in a home, school or work environment, there are steps that can be taken to eliminate or mitigate these exposure risks.”
