Munden’s “I’ll Remember April” is a Backward Glance on The Road not Taken
The story of two women—in different generations—torn between two loves
“…a sweeping, romantic tale chronicling four generations.” — Hollywood Book Reviews
Love can work in mysterious ways, and sometimes, these ways complicate our lives for the better or, the worse. However, love cannot be denied, and it is arguably the most powerful human emotion we can ever experience. This is why when love hits, whether like a small pebble that bonks one on the head or like a freight train carrying bricks, it forces us to take a look at our lives and reflect on our past and our future. Sometimes, however, when this happens, the reflection goes beyond simply looking at previous relationships, but rather, the past and futures as a whole. This is what author Jean Murray Munden wrote about in her book “I’ll Remember April.”
Jean Murray Munden has been telling stories, in one form or another, since she was a young child. A native of a small town, Jean learned early on how to entertain herself and others with her stories. She followed the path akin to a heroine in such stories: moving to the city at 16, then training to be a nurse after finishing high school, similar to the classic tales of women trying to strike big in town. Not long after, she married a widower with three lovely children and enjoyed a marriage that lasted nearly 50 years. Now a 79-year-old widow, she keeps close ties with her family while exploring her career as a writer.
The book is about the story of Lulu Ferris, a woman who sets out to go to her grandmother Louise to talk about her love life. She is in a bit of a pinch for she is already engaged to be married, but found herself in love with a man who is older than she. Louise, in a bid to give the best advice a loving grandmother could, draws on her own past and a similar situation she has been through—that of experiencing two loves—as well as her relationships with her sisters, to give the best answer.
