Barnes & Noble is thrilled to announce the opening of a new bookstore in Village District in Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. The store is the first to be opened by Barnes & Noble in the Raleigh area in 18 years and is one of a number of new stores being opened by the company in 2021. The store enjoys a prominent position in the highly coveted and popular shopping center that is home to some of the best shopping and dining in Raleigh.
The new store will officially open to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony by global best-selling author, Delia Owens, at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 1. Delia Owen’s smash hit Where the Crawdads Sing, published three years ago in August 2018, has sold over 11 million copies worldwide and is being adapted into a motion picture. Delia Owens will participate in a meet and greet with fans immediately following the ribbon cutting. Pre-signed paperback copies of Where the Crawdads Sing will be available for purchase, while supplies last.
“I am so delighted to open a new Barnes & Noble here in my home state of North Carolina,” said Delia Owens. “I have been so touched by the support of so many Barnes & Noble booksellers for Where the Crawdads Sing. I hope shoppers in Raleigh will enjoy this new store as much as I do.”
The newly designed Barnes & Noble, with bespoke oak shelving, is light and bright, and marks a dramatic change in the bookseller’s appearance. Under the leadership of manager Jen Curtis, a 22-year veteran of Barnes & Noble stores in the Carolinas, the team of Village District booksellers have been busy curating a selection of books their customers will gravitate towards.
“Barnes & Noble is delighted to be opening new stores across the country. In fact, we have two opening today and five more planned for later this year. Our new store here in Village District is bright, welcoming and completely designed with this community of readers in mind”, says James Daunt, who became the new CEO at Barnes & Noble in September 2019. “Store manager, Jen Curtis, and her team have embraced the challenge to create within it a distinctive, energetic bookstore that promises to be truly exceptional. We are all excited to have such a special bookstore in Raleigh and honored to have Delia Owens to cut the ribbon at our Grand Opening.”
Barnes & Noble encourages every bookselling team to curate their own bookstore that will appeal to their local clientele. A direction long-time bookseller, James Daunt, has applied to his own independent bookstore that he opened in 1990.The Village District team has been hard at work developing their bookstore and the result is a selection of books and merchandise that will appeal to the residents of Village District. Especially notable is a generous presence of lifestyle books, including many cookbooks, home, decor, and art titles, as well as a robust children’s section. With North Carolina State University located just across the street, there is also a large section devoted to Young Adult titles and to manga. The traditional strengths of B&N in new fiction and non-fiction hardcovers will also be front-and-center at the store.
“I have been a bookseller with Barnes & Noble for over 20 years years and have personally witnessed the impact of our stores,” says Store Manager Jen Curtis. “I feel so lucky to be part of this endeavor, and I just cannot wait to meet the community and start the many events I have planned. I hope to see everyone soon.”
In addition to the grand opening with Delia Owens, the Village District store is planning weekend book signings through September and October with plans for bigger events such as Storytimes and Book Readings in 2022.
