Bloomberg LP Signs Armed Forces Covenant
Bloomberg LP announced that it recently signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces of the Crown, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect in their communities, economy, and society for which they serve with their lives.
By signing the Covenant, Bloomberg is reinforcing its commitment to support serving personnel, service leavers, veterans and their families by fostering relationships between business and the Armed Forces, and supporting employment opportunities for veterans, service spouses and partners.
In supporting those who serve, have served, and their families, and the value they bring to our business, Bloomberg will seek to uphold the principles of the Covenant by:
- Promoting that it is a military friendly organisation;
- Supporting veterans and allies through the Bloomberg Military Veterans Community;
- Running Insight days to support the employment of service leavers; and
- Encouraging the support of non-profit organisations who work with the military community.
Bloomberg has a long and proud history of celebrating its veterans and showcasing the leadership and unique skills they bring to the workforce, while honouring their service and contributions. This is done via the company’s Military and Veterans Community (BMVC), which brings together employees who have served or currently serve in the military, military families, and supporters who promote and maintain Bloomberg as a military-friendly work environment.
“Bloomberg proudly supports veterans, their families, and all who have served around the world,” said Bloomberg Chairman Peter T. Grauer. “Our veterans bring their experiences, backgrounds, and learnings with them to the workplace – and we benefit from that knowledge. There is much that everyone can learn from a vet, whether leveraging the diversity of teams, collaborating on decision-making, or fostering ethical leadership.”
Bloomberg supports the military community in the UK through unique employee engagement opportunities and by working with cultural institutions to amplify educational representations of military history.
Both the company and its employees are proud to support organisations, including the Royal British Legion (RBL), The Poppy Factory, and Veterans Aid with programmatic support, donations, and volunteering projects. In previous years, more than 1,200 employees collaborated with Veterans Aid and Habitat for Humanity to refurbish the Old Rectory in East London as a temporary accommodation and support centre for homeless veterans.
For Veteran’s Month this year, Bloomberg is building on a history of employee support for RBL and the Poppy Appeal by selling poppies both inside and outside of its European headquarters in London and supporting employees running in the annual Poppy Run.
Bloomberg’s arts programme supports artists, invests in cultural organisations and improves audience experience across the globe. By partnering with the Imperial War Museums (IWM) to develop a digital guide on the free Bloomberg Connects app, Bloomberg is making it easy for audiences to access and engage with the institution’s unique collection. At the height of the lockdown in 2020, Bloomberg hosted a discussion with Phil Reed OBE, former Director of the IWM’s Churchill War Rooms, to keep employees engaged. The company also proudly supported 14–18 NOW, the UKs official cultural programme to mark the Armistice centenary in 2018. This year, tours of the IWM, HMS Belfast, Churchill War Rooms, and the new Holocaust Exhibition will be offered for employees and their families.
In addition, Bloomberg is always looking for new opportunities to bring talented veterans into the organisation and continues to focus on hiring more veterans through partners like The Officers’ Association and the Armed Forces’ resettlement service, the Career Transition Partnership.
Major General Tom Copinger-Symes CBE, Director of Military Digitisation, UK Strategic Command, said: “The Armed Forces Covenant is a public pledge of support for those that serve, and I am delighted to be a signatory to Bloomberg LP’s new Covenant. Companies signing the Covenant recognise the value of supporting the Armed Forces, not just from a community perspective, but also because they see the valuable contribution of veterans, reservists, and cadets to their business. On behalf of the Armed Forces and Ministry of Defence, I would like to thank Bloomberg for their long-standing support for our veterans – both in the workplace and in how they are supported and seen in society today – and look forward to many more years of cooperative partnership.”
To date, more than 7,500 organisations have signed the Armed Forces Covenant, including businesses and charities nationwide.
The Armed Forces Covenant
Since 2013, thousands of companies across the UK have publicly pledged their support to the armed forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.
This is a voluntary pledge and helps build a two-way relationship between businesses and Defence, helping to raise awareness of the immense contribution that those who serve, or who have served, and their families, make to everything we do. Businesses may write their own pledges, but they must include two core statements:
- No member of the Armed Forces should face disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services compared to any other citizen.
- In some circumstances special treatment may be appropriate, especially for injured or bereaved Armed Forces personnel and their families.
Each organisation is also encouraged to offer support in ways appropriate to their situation and capacity, with the covenant document including examples of other pledges they can commit to.
