BBC Radio 1 have announced Goldie, Sama’ Abdulhadi, Folamour, Or:la, LCY and Scratcha DVA as the newest members of the Radio 1 Residency line-up.
From Thursday 2nd December, Radio 1’s Residency will continue an early start to the weekend on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance with a brand new line-up of world-renowned DJs. The new format which began in September features DJs performing month-long residencies, mirroring a club-style line-up and allowing more talent to grace the airwaves over the course of twelve months.
The line-up for December, January and February is as follows:
2-30 December
Sama’ Abdulhadi & Scratcha DVA
6-27 January
Folamour & Or:la
3-24 February
Goldie & LCY
Sama’ Abdulhadi
Sama’ Abdulhadi is best known for being one of the first international DJs to emerge from Palestine. Her sets, rooted in high-octane and punchy techno led to her 2018 Boiler Room set being viewed almost three million times and ultimately led to Sama’s first Essential Mix for Radio 1. Sama is also an advocate for the Middle East electronic music movement and uses her sessions to shine a light on talent from the region.
Sama’ Abdulhadi says, “I’ve been listening to Radio 1 for over ten years now and it has always been my go-to place of reference for Electronic Dance music. BBC Radio 1 is my DJ when I don’t have one and that’s why I’m honoured to be taking over one of the slots for the Radio 1 Residency this December! If you want to hear my all-time favourite tracks, current tracks and all the general side tracks that I love, tune in!”
Scratcha Dva
Scratcha DVA is an Electronic musician, DJ and producer who started out in Grime, producing for the likes of Chipmunk, Wiley and Trim. Since then, he has gone on to produce within the realms of House, UK Funky, Techno and underground Club music and has most recently spearheaded a new sound, fusing UK Club music with South African Gqom and Amapiano.
Scratcha DVA says in Scratchanese, “This is sumfin iv wnted 2do 4the longest. Iss like wen i playd football and i wntd 2b drafted 4my district and thn I wntd 2b scouted professonally and then drafted4 the national team. This is bein drafted 4the national team but as a radio DJ. Am supa gr8ful and cnt w8 2run dese heaters!”
Folamour
Folamour has a diverse musical background, being formally trained in drums, bass, guitar and percussion, he has worked with Lyon’s National Orchestra and been involved with projects ranging from pop to jazz. As an artist, Folamour draws on the core values of House, Funk and Disco, always adding his own distinctive flair.
Folamour says, “Really honoured to be invited to showcase my own music and all the sounds I love during my BBC Radio 1 Residency! I’ll take the opportunity to take the audience on a journey through all these records and genres I’ve been loving all my life, from South American music to Funk, African music to Soul, Electronic music and more. I honestly can’t wait for it!”
Or:la
Or:la first burst onto the music scene after her debut release ‘UK Lonely’ and after a string of successive releases post 2017, Or:la has gone on to new ventures shining a spotlight on up and coming talent. In 2020, Or:la won DJ Mag’s ‘Breakthrough DJ of the year’ and delivered her first Essential Mix for Radio 1. And for 2021, she has been nominated for DJ Mag’s prestigious ‘DJ of the year’ award.
Or:la says, “I couldn’t be more excited to join the long list of incredible artists who have contributed to the BBC Radio 1 Residency. I’m looking forward to diving deep into my personal collection and showing listeners tracks that have influenced me and my sets over the years. Very grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait!”
Goldie
Goldie is one of the UK’s most celebrated and revolutionary exponents of UK Jungle and Drum & Bass music. With an exceptional list of musical collaborations including Noel Gallagher and KRS-One, Goldie is one of only a handful of artists to ever co-write with music icon David Bowie. Throughout the decades, Goldie’s multi-faceted career has transitioned from influential graffiti artist to jungle pioneer in the underground rave scene and has even gone on to see him feature in Hollywood blockbusters such as James Bond’s ‘The World Is Not Enough’. His contribution to the UK music and entertainment scene over the past 30 years, led to Goldie being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours in 2016, for ‘helping to shape British culture during the reign of Elizabeth II’.
Goldie says, “I’m really excited to be joining Radio 1 for a residency. It’s going to be great to go to the depths of what Metalheadz is all about and then the new music with the Subjective project. Also looking at how far back we go as being the foundation and blueprint of this music with some of the origination. We seem to forget that that period of time in the UK from 1991-93 was a massive influence from a cultural perspective. We need to celebrate what powerful British music we have, namely this Drum and Bass music.”
LCY
Originating from Bristol but now based in London, LCY has recently emerged as a key proponent of UK underground music and culture. Taking inspiration from traditional Irish lore, fantasy soundtracks and the books of Mary Shelley, in 2021 they released Pulling Teeth – a six-track concept EP that was heavily supported by tastemakers across the Dance scene.
LCY says, "I’ve grown up listening to Radio 1 so this is a huge honour, also to be following in the footsteps of fellow residency holders such as Special Request, Sherelle, Eris Drew and Octo Octa. I’m so happy I get to share the music and energies I love with an audience that I have a massive amount of respect for"
Radio 1 announces brand new residency line-ups every three months.
