Twin Authors and Playwright Kieran and Padraic Reaney Debut a Three-Act Play that Explores Human Connections, History, and Taste of Life
Ireland boasts breathtaking and scenic views that are some of the best in the world. From works of nature like the Cliff of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, the Aran Islands to some of the most iconic architecture like the Rock of Cashel, Blarney Castle, and the Blarney Stone, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, and many more.
Ireland is also an economic anomaly. From being one of the relatively underdeveloped countries by Western European standards, with high poverty, high unemployment, inflation, and low economic growth, the Irish economy rapidly expanded at an average rate of 9.4% between 1995 and 2000--earning its name as the Celtic Tiger. Although its economic growth stunted at an average rate of 5.9% during the following decade until 2008, when it fell into recession, Ireland is still one of the most developed countries. Although corruption, violence, and the perverseness of the world threaten Paddyland, Ireland continues to step in the right direction through art and sports.
In a masterclass display of artistry and creativity, twin authors, poets, philosophers, and playwrights Kieran and Padraic Reaney debut “After Hours,” a witty and humourous three-act play set in a pub in present-day rural Ireland.
“After Hours” is unquestionably a bold and daring project based on the title and the fact that it is a three-act drama. In this book, the twins’ unexpected, inventive imaginations let loose to run wild, as remarked many times about their previous literary works. “After Hours” is original, intimate, startlingly delightful at times, thought-provoking, and profoundly soothing, thanks to their keen philosophy.
The authors bring the readers close to home through the characters. Readers will get to know ten ordinary people who bring in different flavors, tones, and colors. They represent everyday people with everyday issues. Although humor heavily intersperses the dialogues in the play, it can also be very hard-hitting at times.
Fritz and his wife Nicollette, a German couple, have purchased the tavern and are hellbent on earning a financial profit. Many people believe that investment in ’out of the country’ Ireland will flourish. People might think of this as a risky business venture, but they employ it. To attract the crowds, they come up with creative ideas. Francesca, Nicollette’s 17-year-old daughter from her previous relationship, adds to the attraction the pub creates, and you also have Mad Genevieve, their stunning and vivacious Polish housekeeper. The American girl, Natasha, and the opinionated Englishman, Terrence, adds international flavor. There’s Sergeant Hitlow, who speaks about critical subjects most of the time. He does, however, have a flexible side. Add in Fionn, the philosopher, as charming as a sionnach, and Isabelle, whose temperament is unpredictable depending on her mood swings. Finally, there’s Mickey, an elderly single farmer who has always worn his heart on his sleeve, but on this particular night, his personality does a 180-degree shift. Cultural clashes and shocks in their encounters are inevitable because of the open attitude of the foreigners. The Irish contingent tries to figure out how and why it all happened as things spiral out of control. People are continually delving into the past while pondering a bleak future.
This ambitious play explores human encounters, history, and taste of life. Readers will find humor, lesson, and a gratifying climax--all inside a 100-page masterpiece.
