Paul Nelson Gives Autistic People a Place in Juvenile Fantasy Fiction With His Book “Cats of the Pyramids”
For readers who want more people with disabilities in fiction, this is the book – and series – for them.
Discover a mysterious and wonderful world where cats rule.
Autistic people are just like everyone else; they just have a different way of doing things and looking at the world. Paul Nelson affirms this fact in his juvenile fantasy fiction novel, “Cats of the Pyramids” (2020).
“Cats of the Pyramids” is the first book in Nelson’s planned series for kids. The story, told in the first person, is about an autistic 12-year-old boy Adam and his friend Emily’s adventure in the wonderful and mysterious world of Cat People.
“I’ve long thought that cats possess many of the same traits frequently found in those who are autistic, like my son,” the author said. “What if an ancient race of alien cats built the pyramids and introduced autism gene in humans.”
In “Cats of the Pyramids,” Adam and Emily are swept into the world of Cat People, an ancient alien race that uses portals to travel through time and different dimensions. Their adventures also include many encounters with a truly evil being named Randall. Adam and Emily even get the opportunity to time travel back to meet Jesus.
The author is a retired teacher who worked with autistic students for fifteen years. Like the author’s other works of (autism) fiction, this book is also inspired by his autistic son, Michael, who provides the inspiration for many of the characters in the story. He said about his book, “This read is also educational, providing insight into the world of those who are autistic.”
Did the Cat People build the pyramids and introduce the autism gene into the human DNA? Read all about it in “Cats of the Pyramids” by Paul Nelson. Available on Amazon.
“Cats of the Pyramids” will be displayed by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at their booth for the Tucson Festival of Books on March 12-13, 2022, at the University of Arizona Mall, Tucson, AZ.

Their Autism Science Fiction/Fantasy Trilogy, “Fisher’s Autism Trilogy,” is a great adventure for ages 10 and up. It’s fun to read and has a strong message of kindness and acceptance. It has been produced as an audio drama by Pace University’s Education and Drama Departments and is used as a text by some of the Special Education instructors at Pace.
Their other series for kids is the “Cats of the Pyramids” series. They just completed book 2 in that series. It’s entitled, “The Third Stone.”
They have also started to write autism fiction for slightly older readers. Saving Worms After the Rain is a mystery series with an autistic hero. There are currently two books in that series.
Their “Susquehanna Series” is a time travel adventure full of magic and suspense. Their latest books are “From the Moon,” “I Come in Peace,” and “Pandemic Ramblings of an Autism Dad.” All of their books include a lot about them and their life adventures with autism. They believe that including those with disabilities in their fiction is the best way to encourage tolerance and acceptance.
