“Thorny Life (2nd Edition)” by Gurinder Abrol - “Disability Does Not Preclude a Life Well Lived”

“Around 15% of the world’s population, or estimated 1 billion people, live with disabilities. They are the world’s largest minority. This figure are increasing through population growth, medical advances and ageing process,” says the WHO.

The book “Thorny Life (2^nd Edition)” is a memoir of Gurinder Abrol. At a very young age of fifteen months, she was struck down by cerebral palsy, which left her partially paralyzed down her left side. Gurinder got married and gave birth to a son, who she had to raise as a single mother after her husband left them. Determined to make something of herself, she went to university, where she got a BA in “Media, Culture and Society and Sociology.” Soon, she was able to work and support herself. 

In the book, Gurinder writes: “Indomitable spirit,” I tell myself often. “Disability does not preclude a life well lived.”

There’s a lot of disabled people with success stories who have become an inspiration to a lot of differently-abled people as they don’t view their disability as an obstacle. Instead, they use it as an inspiration to do more than what they are expected, to show the world that they can do things just as well as or even better than an abled person can do. Nick Vujicic says that, “for every disability that you have, you are blessed with more than enough abilities to overcome your challenges.”

“Thorny Life (2^nd Edition)” is a story of immense courage and perseverance, and an inspiration to anyone who has been struck down by an unfair world. Because of her disability she has achieved a great deal in her life. The author’s novel is a quick and easy read. Her story is outstanding in its success because of its tragedy. Gurinder reminds us that positive change requires only perseverance and time.
