EPA’s Clean Air in Buildings Challenge and Resources for Building Owners and Operators

New York, NY – WEBWIRE

Proactive steps to improve ventilation, filtration, and other proven air cleaning strategies can reduce the risk of exposure to particles, aerosols, and other contaminants found in too many buildings.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued its Clean Air in Buildings Challenge. It is a call to action and a set of guiding principles and best practices to assist building owners and operators with reducing risks from airborne viruses and other indoor contaminants.

The Clean Air in Buildings Challenge highlights a range of recommendations and resources available for improving ventilation and indoor air quality (IAQ), which can help to better protect the health of building occupants and reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread.

Four key actions outlined in the challenge include:

  1. Creating a clean indoor air action plan that assesses IAQ, plans for upgrades and improvements, and includes HVAC inspections and maintenance.
  2. Optimizing fresh air ventilation by bringing in and circulating clean outdoor air indoors.
  3. Enhancing air filtration and cleaning using the central HVAC system and in-room air cleaning devices.
  4. Conducting community engagement, communication, and education by communicating with building occupants to increase awareness, commitment, and participation in improving indoor air quality and health outcomes.

“While the EPA’s recommended actions cannot completely eliminate risks, they will help to reduce them,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “Proactive steps to improve ventilation, filtration, and other proven air cleaning strategies can reduce the risk of exposure to particles, aerosols, and other contaminants found in too many of our buildings.”

Providing resources to assist building owners and operators in achieving a safe and healthy indoor environment are the building science, industrial hygiene, infection control, and indoor air quality professionals at CTSI. With offices in New York and Florida, CTSI provides testing, monitoring, and consulting services for biological and chemical pollutants; infectious pathogens; and asthma triggers, allergens, and respiratory irritants. Their building assessments can help to determine the effectiveness of infection control efforts, HVAC system filtration, contaminant control in building water systems, and more.

CTSI also recently sponsored an educational video about the EPA’s Clean Air in Buildings Challenge that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/AJczPwv8jzc
