“A Tell of Two Wars,” by Ishmael Graham, Takes Readers Back to an America in Turmoil Unlike Any Other Since the Civil War

The author was drafted into the army the year of the biggest call up of the Vietnam War. He came to realize our country was actually fighting two wars at the same time and the whole struggle was utterly absurd. The on in Southeast Asia viewed by the entire world against people who wanted the freedom to rule their own country. While the secret war here in the U.S. flames being lit by the injustice and inequality that black people were experiencing throughout our nation. After the assassination of Dr. King violence exploded across the land. Many felt his death meant peace and love was murdered that day replaced by violence, death and destruction posing as ’law and order’.

The ’tell’ also follows central characters through a variety of radical, romantic relationships and breakups, tragedies, victories and man unexpected life lessons over many decades. One being Sergeant Ryan who enlisted into the Army to escape his father’s racist views wanting to value persons character rather than skin tone. The war shows how a great number of young men exchanged cap and gowns from high school to boots and riffles for war and the effect their emotional well-being besides the destruction done to their physical and emotional well-being.

The story lets America know how quickly and horribly the battles moved throughout our inner cities not only at the same time but long after troops came home from Vietnam with the father’s, uncles’ and older brothers doing battle over there coming back to places being called ’Little Vietnam’ and ’Saigon’ where orphans, sons, and grandsons fighting over turf wars and gang colors.

The characters in the novel represent people whose lives were either swept up in mayhem or perished in the cross fire. Many true stories about the struggle to survive goes on as we speak.

About the Author
Ishmael Graham was born on what is called the ‘Northend’ of Detroit in one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods. He was drafted into the Army the year they had the biggest call up of the Vietnam War. The unit he was a part of trained to go to Vietnam, however half went to the jungles of Southeast Asia while the other half deployed to the ‘asphalt’ jungle on the Southside of Chicago. He came to realize, that was really two wars that the government was waging, and how horribly insane the entire conflict was. Here he was, a young black kid from Detroit with relatives living on the Southside, told to do what it took to stop the rebelling, shooting, and looting. One of the reasons American soldiers were seen as the enemy back then is because on both fronts, they fought against people who were fighting for their freedom over here and over there. He came home disappointed, angry, lost, and confused. He sought companionship in what is called ‘street life’. Thus, he is a graduate of the school of hard knocks along with later becoming a graduate of a four-year college university. He feels it is our duty to help plan a better life for ourselves, our children, and our children’s children.
