“Who Let the Mongoose Out?” is set in an imaginary forest full of excitable creatures. All of the excitement can be traced back to the arrival of a little foreign creature known as a mongoose.
Beginning with the mongoose upsetting a snake—as mongooses do—the reader is immediately drawn into the story. If a mole sees a snake fleeing by jumping down the mole’s home or burrow, it will become upset.
A chain reaction of panic emerges among the forest’s inhabitants. Their active imaginations have led them to the absurd conclusion that the world is turning inside out, which is not the case. The lesson here is that, especially in the present day, it’s crucial to have all the information at hand before drawing any conclusions.

William Tyler is a writer of whimsy and persuasion, a successful creator of advertising and commercials, and a retired university professor who believes learning should be fun. In the spirit of teaching through storytelling, he introduces a mischievous mongoose to a forest of skittish animals. As a creative executive at an advertising agency, he created award-winning campaigns for clients such as Budweiser, Red Lobster, Sambo’s (remember them?), and Ralston Purina pet foods. One of his most memorable creative efforts was “Ask any mermaid you happen to see what’s the best tuna - Chicken of the Sea.” He then taught copywriting and communication strategy to college students for over twenty years until retirement.
