Author Jo Anne Kaabar Retells Her Co-Dependency Survivor Story with Book Exhibit at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books

The reality of co-dependency in abusive families leaves a lasting impact on survivors. But for Jo Anne Kaabar, it was not enough to just share her story. Her book, “Exit the Hollow Moon,” weaves her experience with the lives of fellow survivors in their 12-step recovery program.

“Hello, I’m Daystarr. I’m co-dependent.”

The exhibits at the 2023 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books will feature books and memoirs from survivors of many hardships. However, Jo Anne Kaabar did not think it was enough to just share her story of surviving an abusive co-dependent parent.

Her book “Exit the Hollow Moon” shares not only her experience but also the experiences of many other women who suffered from co-dependent relationships. Part memoir and part fictionalized retelling, Kaabar weaves together their accounts as the correspondence between women of the same 12-step recovery program.

Its main character is Daystarr, a woman who was adopted by an emotionally abusive and troubled mother. Since the moment she was brought in, all Daystarr could remember were days of constant criticism and denial of her independence as a person. There was nothing that she could experience that her mother didn’t stake a claim to.

Yet as she emails these stories about her, different chapters switch over to other members who also share the form co-dependency took in their lives. Though their names have changed, their accounts are true-life tales of abuse and imprisonment. They span not only the lives of people living in California but even all the way to the Middle East.

For fans of feminist literature, Kaabar’s work is a fresh addition that explores the depth that abusers will go to, while also tying the nature of co-dependency to patriarchy, generational culture, and nationalism.

“Exit the Hollow Moon” by Jo Anne Kaabar will be exhibited by self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet at their exhibit at booth #225 at the 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books. The book event will take place on April 22-23, 2023, at the University of Southern California. Purchase a copy today on Barnes & Noble and Amazon.
