Henry ‘Hank’ J. Silva was born on the island of Oahu three months before the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. He attended public and Catholic schools and obtained a college degree in criminal justice. He followed a police career like his grandfather before he did. Silva began studying martial arts at eight years old with Judo, then moved on to Aikido as he got older, and finally, before going into the military, obtained his black belt in Karate.

He was assigned to the Army Security Agency and moved to the big island of Hawaii in 1966, becoming a police officer. He advanced to the rank of Major several years before retiring. However, he continued with police work as a Reserve Police Officer, during which his last 18 years were spent working cold case homicides.

To keep fit, he was a gym guy, benching over 400 pounds into his early 60s. Now he shoots regularly at his mountain cabin range. His son, who just passed away, represented the state in the ROTC rifle competition at the Junior Olympics. He has been married to his bride Reba for 56 years; he knows how to pick them.
