Modernized Processing Line Started Up at German Tinplate Producer
- Modernization of electrics and automation systems at slitting line improves effectiveness and availability
- Fast production ramp-up and minimized shutdown period
Primetals Technologies has started up a modernized slitting line at thyssenkrupp Rasselstein’s steel plant in Andernach, Germany. Primetals Technologies upgraded the Level 1 automation system and the drive system at slitting line No. 1.
Several aspects were important to thyssenkrupp Rasselstein when choosing Primetals Technologies as the supplier. Thanks to a standardized and adaptable automation solution, the shutdown period was minimized, and full production was ensured just three days after startup. The proven automation solution and good experiences from another recent project were two other decisive factors.
Simplified operationPrimetals Technologies was responsible for engineering, project management, and implementation of the new solution. The standard Level 1 automation solution for finishing lines was, during the engineering phase, adapted to the specific needs of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein. The result features all-in-one software for all relevant automation-related aspects, including line coordination, sequence and support functions, material tracking, diagnostics, data management, and auxiliary control functions. Primetals Technologies has also supplied thyssenkrupp Rasselstein with new AC and DC drive technologies, a hydraulic drive control system, and a software safety solution for the operation of the slitting line.
The project includes a state-of-the art visual human-machine interface, which features an intuitive design and advanced diagnostics functions. The new system makes it easier to operate the slitting line. In addition, maintenance work can now be executed even more efficiently because of the much-improved diagnostics for the slitting line.
Increased availabilityThanks to the modernization project, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein can expect higher availability levels for the slitting line. Securing an ample supply of spare parts will also be significantly simpler going forward, as the line now conforms to the most modern standards.
Established in 1760, thyssenkrupp Rasselstein manufactures tinned or special chromium-plated sheet at thicknesses from 0.100 to 0.499 mm. Over 90 percent of the steel finds its application in the packaging sector, while the material is also used in the automotive and electronics industries. Today, the company supplies around 400 customers in 80 countries, making it one of the largest packaging manufacturers in Europe.
