Jill Gilson’s Touching Family Memoir of Late Father and Paraplegic is Exhibited at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2023
When a fateful blood infection rendered her father a paraplegic, it felt like the worst day in the lives of Jill Gilson’s entire family. Despite this, it was also a time of love in the midst of the tragedy. That’s why, as both a form of therapy and a way to use her writing skills for a loving purpose, she published the story of her father’s remaining moments on Earth. The book was even exhibited at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023.
“Life’s journey is not the same for all, but I hope my family’s story can still help each other who are now in similar circumstances.”
Jill Gilson always had a dream of being an author. As an English teacher, she knew the power of the simple act of arranging words in a sentence.
However, she never expected to use her own writing skills to share a story that is equally part tragic and uplifting.
In 2020, she published a memoir titled “Dad’s Journey: The One That Taught Us How to Love.” Of late, she arranged to have this book exhibited at the recently-concluded 2023 L.A. Times Festival of Books.
“Dad’s Journey” tells the story of her father, Arnie Kustka. When a blood infection resulted in him becoming paralyzed, the event became one of the most traumatic moments in the family’s history. It meant a time when they would see Arnie gradually be less and less capable of the many happy activities his family grew up seeing. No longer would they see him dance with their mother to their favorite music or bring out wonderful items from his carpentry workshop.
Despite all that pain, it was also a time when all the family’s children really came together. With the goal of making sure their parents could live their best life in the midst of this tragedy, their love grew stronger.
When Arnie finally passed away, Gilson thought that sharing their experience through her book would also provide hope to other families in similar situations. Much like her entire family, she let the experience transform her and taught her the meaning of loving one’s family regardless of any conditions they suffer.
“Dad’s Journey: The One That Taught Us How to Love” by Jill Gilson is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
