A Practice to Build a Positive Identity by Co-Authors Jerald Forster and Jennifer Rose Exhibited at L.A. Times Festival of Books

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books was once again filled with exhibits showcasing books on positive psychology, optimism, and mindfulness. Among them was an in-depth guide to a mindful practice for developing a sense-of-self grounded in strengths, written by a psychologist and a meditation teacher, Jerald Forster and Jennifer Rose. It was a book that was both inspirational and informative for many readers during the event.

“I got this book as a gift over quarantine/stay at home and am glad I was willing to get it started. The instructions and website component are clear and provide a path to creating healthy habits and cultivating resilience. I started it with a group for accountability and have found that helpful.” - Camila Gomez Wills

The L.A. Times Festival of Books has always been a favorite event for showcasing new self-help books that teach meditation, mindset-changing, positive affirmations, and more.

That’s why co-authors Jerald Forster and Jennifer Rose saw it as another wonderful opportunity to display their book: “Articulating Your Strengths: A Mindful Practice for Developing Your Positive Identity.” The book’s display was made possible by ReadersMagnet, a self-publishing and book marketing company.

In Articulating Your Strengths, Forster and Rose provide both a method for shifting focus from personality deficits to strengths, and a means for a gradual recognition of the value of present-focused awareness. They also share plenty of interesting information about where a number of these ideas originate.

For example, Forster has noted that the ideas he shares are derived from the Personal Construct Psychology of George Kelly and Abraham Maslow’s humanistic theory. Along with listing the usual benefits of positive self-identity, their book traces its conception back to psychology theories of the past. Still, the main process they describe in the book is written in a readable step-by-step manner.

The co-authors back up the process with a considerable resource list of studies along with the wealth of their own academic and personal experience. Forster holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and served as a counselor educator at the University of Washington from 1966 to 2001. In addition, Rose is a certified yoga teacher from the Himalayan Institute and has been teaching meditation techniques since 2003. She’s also a talented writer and was very eager to help put to paper the ideas that Forster put together from his time in academia.

“Articulating Your Strengths: A Mindful Practice for Developing Your Positive Identity” by Jerald Forster and Jennifer Rose is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The book also serves as an excellent companion to resource videos on the co-authors’ website at https://articulatingyourstrengths.org/.
